Solid Waste Management

1. Door to Door Waste Collection

WSSCM has taken initiatives to provide service delivery at door step. In this regard door to door waste collection has been carried out inall 14 UCs, 

where, Suzuki dumpers at a specific time collect waste from houses. Local residents are informed about timing. With the implementation of this 

model not only public gets service delivery at door step but the issues of formation of garbage dumps in the streets are also addressed. Currently 68%

households are benefited from this system. WSSCM is taking measures to extend door to door waste collection services in other areas as well.

2. Placement of Waste Bins:

WSSCM have placed 190 No’s of different sizes of waste containers along major/ minor roads, canals, major drains, inside the settlements

and commercial areas to facilitate the communities to safely dispose the generated waste inside the container for safe disposal.

3. Manual Sweeping:

WSSCM has deployed team of around 90 sweepers for manual sweeping in first shift. All major roads and minor roads are swept on daily basis while streets are swept on need basis. All sweepers are provided with uniform, shoes, brooms and health & safety gadgets.

4. Mechanical Sweeping

Two no’s mechanical sweepers are deployed to sweep all the roads having center media during second half of the night. On an average 32 km of roads are swept on daily basis.

5. Second Shift Working

Solid Waste is generated in the communities throughout the day, so arrangements have been made to cater the generated load in the earliest possible time. Mini tipper have been deployed as motorized beat on all main roads and in commercial areas to efficiently manage waste containers and collect municipal solid waste.

6. Container Washing:

To portray sense of clean environment, it is important that WSSCM garbage containers remains in clean condition. To serve this purpose, WSSCM has deployed one special utility vehicle for washing along with one sanitary worker to wash the dirty containers on daily basis.

7. Integrated Resource Recovery Center- Mardan:

The municipal solid waste generated in the jurisdiction of WSSCM contains 60% of kitchen/ green waste. To recover material from this waste, WSSCM has established, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa first ever compost plant having 5 tons per day capacity with the financial aid of Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) in 2020 on pilot basis. The compost plant is in successful operations since then and is concerting waste to a valuable resource i.e. compost which is not only contributing to the soil fertility but is source of revenue too and intuitional capacity building.
